With 10 distinct rooms, a new restaurant and bar, two pool areas, a wellness room and ample gardens, the Robertson Small provides superlative service to our guests, maintaining the standards that make it Robertson’s only five-star hotel.

Designer Sophie Ashby decorated each of the 10 rooms at The Small with the same principles in mind but each has its own character, with custom artworks and designs from an innovative list of collaborators to bring colour, warmth and soul to the building.

“I have used 12 different colour tones throughout the hotel and each room varies slightly in combination. I was inspired by the local terrain, flora and fauna, so there’s elements of clay, ochre, aloes, the mountains - colours you could be surrounded by whatever the weather, wherever you are. I wanted there to be a strong link between outside and in”

In winter of 2016, The Small underwent a major renovation coordinated by the esteemed Studio Ashby. Designers and collaborators were tasked with inventing a range of bespoke items that conspired to create a brand new look while enhancing the award-winning facilities.

Sophie Ashby

Successful in London but with roots of her own in South Africa’s wine country, Sophie Ashby returned to imbue The Robertson Small with elegance, warmth and plenty of local character. Determined to work exclusively with local designers, Ashby orchestrated a complete renovation, elements of which can be found in every detail of the hotel, from the range of tapestries courtesy of Alexis Barrell to a custom playlist curated from Roastin’ Records and a signature scent concocted by House of Gozdawa.

With The Robertson Small Hotel’s ethos of supporting and celebrating contemporary art from South Africa, a partnership formed in 2021 with Art Gazette x Norval Foundation elevates this commitment to new heights. Our new collections are curated by talented South African artist, Morné Visagie, who is also the co-founder of Art Gazette, an alternative online art platform for curating collections of art. Art Gazette partnered with Norval Foundation in 2019 to present a range of accessible artworks for both new and established collectors with original artworks by over 400 emerging and established contemporary artists.

House of Gozdawa

House of Gozdawa is an artisanal epicene perfume house based in Cape Town that made its name creating small batch perfume developed purely from natural essential oils. The Robertson Small signature scent was created from essential oils extracted from flora and fauna from the surrounding countryside.

Roastin’ Records

Cape Town based vinyl shop and label Roastin’ Records delved into its vast musical archives to put together a playlist for The Small that sets it apart from the usual hotel fare. Here, elevator music and background lounge is replaced with a classic vintage and contemporary albums from the likes of Van Morrisson, Miles Davis and Radiohead.
