The Small News

Thank you, June!

We bid goodbye to our general manager June Bouwer as she takes time to spend with her family.

Can you take us through some of the highlights of your time at The Small?

I have been at The Small for close to seven years and I have loved every single minute! There were so many highlights as a synergy and a development of a 'family' situation evolved. My staff were phenomenal and it was incredible watching how each one developed at their own pace and followed their individual paths of where they wanted to be in the hotel.

What were the early days like and how have things evolved?

Arriving at The Small initially it took my breath away; it was beautiful and had just had a refurbishment with the artistic brush and love of our owner Abbey and her well-appointed team. The very essence of the hotel was beautiful and all that was needed was to ensure that the correct operational procedures were in place to maintain the brand and allow the staff to grow in confidence. Meeting each of the staff I knew that there was a hunger to learn, to take this 'lady' in their hands, and kiss it and go on from there, then there would be growth and a beautiful journey could not fail!

Your favourite parts of The Small?

My team, the hotel and of course the gardens, it became my home where our guests were received with love and care. My favourite room was number love 10 as it has best views of the garden and the Manor House.

Can you describe the perfect stay at The Small?

Always stay for two days or more! The hotel and surrounding valley has so much to offer and with the guidance of Walter and Tinashe you are sure to have a great stay. The Wellness Spa is an absolute must and literally sets the tone of your stay! The Robertson Valley is something of a hidden gem, one of my must-do experiences is a visit to Silverthorn. John and Karen Loubser are wonderful hosts. The wines in the valley are exceptional, some other favourites are Arendsig, Springfield and Mont Blois...all beautiful!

What's next for June?

I fell in love with hospitality and my heart remains there still, and would most probably return in time to come... but for now, I want to focus on my family. I have three beautiful girls, grandchildren, great son-in-laws and I'm looking forward to indulging in the wonder of all that they are. It is time.

Dear June,

All these years you have not only created a better working environment but also shaped many lives here , so I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart, personally I can proudly say you are the best boss one could ask for, wishing you all the best in your future, love from Tinashe Chimutashu, food and beverage manager.

Dear June,

I was once an ordinary employee who became extraordinary. Thank you for the training, you taught me that when you decide to finish what you have started you must always make sure you finish it on high note. Thank you so much June! Love, Walter Ncube
